IN BRIEF

A 1997 Supreme hoodie replacing the brand’s familiar English wordmark with the Arabic سبحان, or subḥān, while retaining the recognisable red Box Logo structure. Produced only three years after Supreme opened on Lafayette Street, it demonstrates how quickly the brand had developed an identity capable of surviving the removal of its literal name. Disndat acquired this size Medium example in the late 2010s and sold it in 2026.

ARCHIVE NOTE

Supreme’s Arabic Box Logo hooded sweatshirt dates to 1997, when the New York skate brand was still only three years removed from the opening of its Lafayette Street store. The heather-grey version documented here places white Arabic embroidery inside Supreme’s familiar red rectangular device, replacing the italicised English wordmark without abandoning the visual structure through which the brand had already begun to identify itself.

Specialist histories of early Supreme place the first Arabic Box Logo graphic on T-shirts shortly before the sweatshirt, followed in 1997 by embroidered hoodies in two principal combinations: heather grey with a red box and black with a black box. A crewneck using the Arabic treatment was also produced. Later Arabic-logo releases would remove the surrounding rectangle entirely, making the 1997 sweatshirt part of a relatively early period in which Supreme was testing how far its core identity could be altered while remaining recognisable.

The embroidery reads سبحان, transliterated subḥān. It is often described in resale listings as simply meaning “Supreme in Arabic”, but that is not linguistically precise. Classical Arabic lexicons associate subḥān with glorification, exaltation and declaring perfection or transcendence, most familiarly through the expression subḥān Allāh. Its relationship to the English word “Supreme” is therefore conceptual rather than a direct translation.

That makes the graphic more interesting than a straightforward translated logo. Supreme’s usual Box Logo depends on the immediate recognition of a single English word. Here, that word disappears, yet the surrounding red rectangle, embroidery scale and placement preserve the brand identity. The object demonstrates how quickly Supreme had developed a visual system strong enough to remain legible even after its literal name was removed.

The Arabic treatment remained part of Supreme’s wider graphic vocabulary in subsequent decades, but the boxed form became closely associated with the brand’s early period. Supreme returned to the Arabic Box Logo prominently for Spring/Summer 2026, releasing a new T-shirt version on 26 February 2026. The revival placed renewed attention on a graphic whose original sweatshirt iteration was approaching thirty years old.

No reliable production quantity for the 1997 hooded sweatshirt has been identified. Surviving examples appear infrequently and pricing varies considerably according to colour, size, condition and authentication confidence, but the Archive does not assign an edition size or rely on unsupported descriptions such as “one of X produced”. Its significance is better understood through its date and place within Supreme’s developing graphic language than through an unverified scarcity figure.

The example documented here is a size Medium in heather grey with a red Arabic Box Logo. It entered Disndat’s collection in the late 2010s after being acquired from a substantial Canadian Supreme collection. No original receipt or first-owner documentation accompanied it. The sweatshirt had been worn on a small number of occasions by its previous owner and was preserved as a used garment rather than as a deadstock collectible.

Disndat retained the sweatshirt for several years before selling it in London during Known Source’s Matchday Vault on 11 July 2026, a football- and streetwear-focused archive market held at The Exchange NW1 during the 2026 World Cup period. Known Source described the event as bringing together streetwear, vintage football clothing, sneakers and archive pieces from more than 30 dealers.

Within the Archive, the sweatshirt is important because it records an early stage in Supreme’s development when the Box Logo was already functioning as more than a written brand name. Changing the language did not remove the identity of the object. The surrounding form, colour and cultural context were already enough.
